Review: Babette – “FAKE”

1 minute, 53 seconds Read

Blasting into action with a pounding drumbeat, “FAKE” immediately sets the stage for an ethereal 80s Propaganda Duel esque experience. The intro is a perfect segue into lush vocals that carry a Kim Wilde edge, effortlessly building into a powerful chorus. This chorus, reminiscent of 90s indie heroes Republica, boasts an anthemic, powerful, and melodic delivery that hooks the listener from the get-go.

“FAKE” is catchy, driving, and uplifting—a perfect track to speed down the highway to. This delightful piece of music blends radio-friendly pop rock with an 80s vibe, all while maintaining an alternative, rebellious edge that appeals to listeners of all ages. In a world inundated with AI-generated tracks, Babette’s “FAKE” stands out as a beacon of real, well-produced music, giving us hope in the midst of synthetic soundscapes.

Rating: 8/10

Life can be really fake. Friends can be fake, the music business can be fake. We’ve all known someone in our lifetime that we would describe as FAKE. Short after the release of Babette’s new Afrikaans album, Tweede Kans, she brings us this new English single – FAKE.

Picture the most popular Mean Girls ‘esque’ films we’ve all been watching for decades. A soon to be discovered’ geeky girl competing with the A-listers in her school. Picture a young , upcoming artist attending an event surrounded by artists who believe they own the space. Now picture a relationship where everything you think is real, is not.

FAKE is an anthem for anyone who has ever felt like they had to fight for their space to exist. Babette has been one of the brave voices in South African music taking a stand against bullying, gender-based violence and being downtrodden by people’s perceptions. Like all of her music, it’s cheeky en pays homage to the Pop sounds from the 80’s and 90’s. This is what every downtrodden girl wants to hear and play loudly.

LYRICS:
Nothing you see is how it is supposed to be
They’re asleep while you’re staring at their made up dreams
One mistake and they can break, everything is always fake
This song will speak to every young, rocker heart. It’s an anthem to live by.
Just be yourself – everything else is FAKE
