Positive, Charming and Radiating Talent, we got Up Close with Pop Music’s Alexander James (AJ) Rodriguez to chat all things music and more!
Thanks for chatting with us today, to kick off, how would you describe the music that you typically create?
I have always loved lyrics that tell a story, and that take you on a sort of journey, so for my own music I wanted to sing what people could relate to and feel inspired from. I want my music to have a purpose and meaning. My first single, ‘My Crew’ is about friendships and your BFF’s at school that stick with you through everything. My second single, ‘Your Smile’ is about a girls smile and how that makes you feel, and ‘Up To You’ is about courage and that we can all achieve greatness and do anything we put your minds to. We are all champions and we can achieve anything. It’s very inspiring. I love that.
Who inspired you to make music?
Music is very much in my family. My great grandmother, grandmother and my mother were/are great singers powerhouse singers, so I think genetically I was supposed to continue that line. Also, I have been acting since I was 6, so adding another string to my bow, so to speak, with singing was a natural progression.
Spill the beans, do you sing in the shower, and if so what songs?
Ha! Yes, I do. Actually, I sing everywhere and anywhere. I love playing the games, ‘Name That Tune’ and ‘One Word: Sing A Song.’ I have had the songs GENETICS and Watermelon Sugar going around my head all summer long. Those guys know how to make a hook stick!
If you could open a show for any artist who would it be?
Oh, that’s easy – I would open for Harry Styles or One Direction for sure!
Is there anyone you’d like to collaborate with?
I’d like to work with people that have a similar storytelling vision as I do. That we can make music magic happen together, so people are left feeling good about themselves through the songs. Music makes me happy, and I want to pass that on.
What is the best advice you’ve been given?
I have been given a lot of advice; a few things stick with me but today I will share this one from my mom, “Life is a marathon not a sprint. Take in the view, breathe in its air, and enjoy the rollercoaster ride. Because life is full of highs and lows, we grow from.”
